Fanal
A Madeiran troll under a spell.
The Laurisilva of Madeira is an outstanding relict of a previously widespread laurel forest type, and the largest surviving area of laurel forest. Some 90% of the laurissilva is primary forest, and includes trees up to 800 years old that predate the settlement of the islands. The long-reaching branches of the trees make them feel alive, like ancient creatures under some curious spell, just waiting for the right words to burst into life again and carry on with their daily chores. The forest, located in the highlands of Madeira, is often covered with thick fog that just adds up to the mystic vibe of the place.
